Lcd-display Vs AMOLED Display – What type Is Better?

If you buy a new smartphone, what do a person look for? Camera, RAM, Internal Storage and many other configurations. One thing many clients ignore is Display. And some of these who consider the display while purchasing, they only check for the quality. What they forget is the type of display technology is much more important than the quality of the display itself.

So , in this post, I am not only going the clarify the technology used behind the displays but also which is the better approach to you.

So , there are two displays you will see nowadays on smartphones:

Lcd-display
AMOLED Display
1 . LCD Display:

LCD comes in two types: IPS plus TFT. The most used one is IPS. It stands for In-Plane Switching. You would find IPS displays on most of the iPhones.

Polarized lights are used in the IPS. There are also two color filters utilized in IPS Display, horizontal and top to bottom filter. This polarized light is then passed through this filters to manage the brightness and also to turn each pixel on and off. For each pixel, there is an use of 2 Transistors. You will see better sharpness and clarity on IPS since the pixels are packed closely together. But the drawback of IPS is that all the pixels are backlit whether the device is on. Even if it is a black one which affects the comparison and blackness. Also, the observing angles are not good in IPS as compared to AMOLED.

2 . AMOLED Display:

AMOLED stands for Active Matrix Natural LED. As the name says, AMOLED has an active matrix of OLEDs. When an electric current is passed through this particular OLEDs they generate light. Now, these OLED pixels are incorporated with the array of the transistor which transistor works as a switch to control the individual pixels.

This is what helps the devices to take the decision of turning person pixels on and off.

Now let’s compare both and see which one is better?

Considering that AMOLED produces light from individual pixel the brightness level around the display is less as compared to the LCD. But in Super AMOLED that was seen in Samsung’s Galaxy S5 can produce the same brightness level as LCD. Also, the colors on AMOLED looks much better than that of LCD because of naturally higher saturation.

If Energy consumption is considered, AMOLED consumes much less power as compared to LCD. This is because within the LCD the entire backlight is upon whereas AMOLED is producing almost all light, a black pixel will be off which consumes less strength.

Another advantage of LCD over AMOLED is you don’t have to worry about the burn-in on your screen. AMOLED still challenges with this problem but on LCD you can leave any image to get no matter how long and you won’t see any weird shapes on your display but sadly this is not the case with AMOLED.
